Some Top Tips for Search Engines

To be found on the web, Internet surfers will use search engines - and they could be using any one from over 1500 search engines and directories that are currently available on the net. The number of search engines is also increasing day by day.

Statistics suggest that there are in excess of one billion pages on the World Wide Web , so finding the right choice of site containing relevant information is more difficult than we would like it to be.

Please refer below - we have provided some user tips for search engines.

If you require information on registering your web site with the search engines then please click here to Contact Us for more details of services.

Search Tip No.1 - Decide which search engine to use!

There are probably ten top search engines on the Net, so choose your engine wisely. Probably the most popular are Google, MSN, Yahoo, and AOL with a number of others providing similar services.

Additionally some search facilities provide a composite of a collection of search engine findings - theoretically providing a wider informed selection. Take a moment to read up on your search engine the next time you use their facilities.

Search engines are constantly collecting new information from web sites that are published, updated and registered from all over the world. The search engine tries to match your search query (the words you that you have typed in) with the text from all of the web pages in its database.

Search Tip No. 2 - Decide which words to use!

Before you to the information you require.

Should the search engine come back with no results and you have used your best descriptive words, check that you haven't made a spelling or typing error.

Most search engines do not pay any attention to words such as "and", "for", "of" etc. These are often referred to as stop words.

Your input of your words will be understood as lower case. Most search engines are NOT case sensitive!

Search Tip No. 3 - What can you try?

Some search engines prefer pages where the words you have typed in are found close together. Sometimes the only relevant pages are those where some or all of the query words are a phrase.

This is a simple example:-  space rocket

Go!

Search using quotation marks " " , brackets ( ) and longer phrases
You can enclose words in double quotes to force words to appear together in all of the found pages. To assist your findings you can try using a larger phrase.

Instead of quotations separating your search terms, substitute parentheses ( ).

Example:- " " "space rocket launch"

Go!

Example:- ( ) (space rocket launch)

Go!

Search using and or plus sign + or &
Some search engines will respond to the use of the "+" plus sign, or the "&" ampersand they will treat them like the use of the word "and".

Generally put a space before the "+".

Example:- and "rocket and launch"

Go!

Example:- + "rocket +launch"

Go!

Example:- & "rocket & launch"

Go!

Search using not or minus sign  -
Some search engines also respond to the use of a "-" minus sign, or "!" exclamation mark to exclude words or phrases on the pages returning from your search engine query.

Example:- not "rocket not launch"

Go!

Example:- - "rocket -launch"

Go!

Example:- ! "rocket !launch"

Go!

Search using or or the symbol |
Searching with an "or" statement can cause problems, some search engines would have to use two searches, as two requests are being made. Some engines will respond to this request. Generally, search engines follow defined logic - only one request at a time!

Example:- or "space or rocket launch"

Go!

Example:- | "space rocket |launch"

Go!

Search using near or the symbol ~
and they will treat them like the use of the word "near".

Example:- near "rocket near launch"

Go!

Example:- ~ "rocket ~launch"

Go!

Search using the star symbol *
Some search engines will respond to the use of the "*" sign, and they will treat them like a wildcard. To make use of this search for rocket* rather than rockets. Rockets will reduce the search to the plural - the wildcard should include rocket and rockets.

Example:- no wildcard "rockets"

Go!

Example:- wildcard* "rocket*"

Go!

Search using  lower and UPPER cases
Some search engines will respond to the use of the UPPER case, and they will treat them with a higher priority.

Example:- no priority "space rocket launch"

Go!

Example:- priority ROCKET "space ROCKET launch"

Go!

Search using link:
Some search engines will respond to the use of the "link:", and this requests to fin pages with pages linked to a specific page. The word link should be lower case.

Example:- link: "link:http://www.rockets.com"

Go!

Search using title:
Some search engines will respond to the use of the "title:", and this requests to find words in the page title containing those specified words.

Example:- title: "title:space rocket launch"

Go!

What results can you expect?

We are unable to guarantee the success of your findings.

Unfortunately there is not one set of rules that applies to all search engines!

Even using these tips you will probably hit a large number of pages / web sites.

All search engines have defined their own criteria for accepting registration of pages and web site content.

No one search engine searches all of the pages on the World Wide Web!

Good luck! - Click on the results of the findings to take you to that linked page.
