Our introduction to your options for hosting:-

ISP's and WPP's unravel the jargon and complexities!

Selecting the right Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Web Presence Provider (WPP) is not an easy task, and should only be influenced by your specific requirements. We can help you make an informed choice.

Further to our ongoing research we have selected an exclusive group of ISP's and WPP's that offer service, reliability and value for money.

Whenever possible our research includes a survey of services, meetings, and site visits to assess the suitability of the Internet Service Providers and Web Presence Providers to host an Internet application such as your web site or e-commerce site. At all times we will endeavour to match client requirements with the variety of facilities offered by the ever growing number of ISPs, WPPs, ASPs (Application Service Providers) and many other services.

Our survey addresses the concern that new entrants to the Internet arena will be faced with an increasingly complex decision for selecting their hosting services. Furthermore, we feel that the industry jargon often masks the extent of functionality offered, or the capability of certain options as value for money.

The research activities to date has provided e-exec with invaluable information to recommend hosting facilities that can  meet the client's expectations and budgets.

The role of the ISP and WPP

Internet Service Providers (ISP's) are normally the point of connection to the internet, the "carrier" that provides the "gateway" to connect to the net from your PC. These are the organisations that your PC dials to connect to their computer that in turn is connected to the Internet.

Be careful - ISP's (Internet Service Providers) should can be confused with Web Presence Providers (WPP's), please refer to details on hosting options below.

General Summary of Hosting Options (ISP's and WPP's)

Internet Service Provider - An organisation that offers access to the Internet, and often provides web space for their customers to publish their web pages, generally free of charge. This option is unlikely to be suitable for any serious business application. May carry extra costs for add-on services, usage and software options. Response times, especially at peak times, may be questionable.

Web Presence Provider - An organisation that specialises in hosting web pages (web sites), for a fee. Other add-on services such as POP3 e-mail, CGI, Databases are often chargeable. Generally free reporting on site stats that are an essential tool to assist the improvement of site performance.  The functionality offered must match your software that your web site has been compiled within. Site performance and response times are key issues for these suppliers.

Free Web Presence Provider - An organistation that specialises in hosting but will generally charge for add-on and services whilst displaying adverts for their services at every page change on you site. Response times and reliability may be questionable.

Dedicated Web Presence Provider - Client rents or buys a server that is housed with a Hosting facilitator, they provide the connection ("pipe") from your server to the Internet. Expensive option, used by Client companies who require first class response performance and are prepared to pay for it! Often used by Portal sites. More flexibility, you pay to have the machine configured to run your software options. generally the client has to find the engineer to do this AND maintain it.

Operate your own Web Server - Not to be recommended, unless you have your own competent IT personnel and the Budget to meet the costs of setting up connection and security to the Internet. This can be expensive.

Some issues to consider in any of your choices:-

Access logs - reports on Hits, pages visited etc.

Hosting configuration - software available and functionality

Reliability - Both server and Internet connection

Maintenance - ongoing maintenance and upgrades to systems

Scripts - styles catered for - CGI, Java, Perl etc

Software compatibility- Web publishing, Databases, E-Commerce

Secure File Servers for e-commerce

Streaming facilities - Audio and Video applications

Storage Space required for the site

Technical support for the server / web site

Web Site traffic - some providers charge for traffic
